Dance Lineage

Loie Fuller never had any formal training but did dance with Isadora Duncan. She created a school based upon the ideology of natural dance and being organic. Loie invited Isadora to dance in her school/company but instead helped fund Isadora's tour through Europe. She worked with many other artists and painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec and but as far as dancing she always did her own thing and helped begin the new 'freestyle' of the modern dance world. She definitely is an inspiration for others in the dance world but she was not necessarily one of the "Major Modern Marvel's". She did however pave the way for other's to break out of the 'ballerina' image the Russian world was putting into the minds of people around the world.

  1. Now I understand why Fuller would want to be more of an organic mover and do what feels natural, but did she still believe in the technique of movement? Or did she just forget about it altogether at her school? Going off of that, what would be one of the ways Fuller helped break dancers out of the "ballerina" image?

  2. I think something that I would have thought about if I was in her class would to just let everything go and do what feels completely natural. Since ballet is the opposite of natural, it is extremely important to know what it feels to let the ballet technique go. There isn't a lot of information out there about her school but there is a company called Time Lapse Dance ran by a woman named Jody Sperling. She has studied Loie Fuller and has created a company based on Loie's performances and 'technique'.

  3. Loie Fuller is a huge inspiration, this is really interesting; I did'nt know Loie Fuller had no formal training at all, did she ever try or take class any where around that time before she opened her school? Great work Danielle!
